Manhattan Beach Votes to Prosecute Its Own Misdemeanors, Infractions Due to Gascon’s Unwillingness to Prosecute These Crimes

Amidst the growing frustration within the city over the reluctance of L.A. District Attorney George Gascon to pursue most state misdemeanor cases, the Manhattan Beach City Council has voted to add prosecution of misdemeanors and infractions within its jurisdiction.

Under the newly established agreement, the city can now prosecute offenses such as trespassing, graffiti, illegal shopping carts, public urination, public nuisances, and smoking in public as misdemeanors.

DA Gascon’s office oversees prosecutorial services for Manhattan Beach. However, his directives have curtailed the prosecution of these offenses, forcing the city, along with others, to seek alternative avenues to address and deter these “quality of life” crimes.

“This has been a long road for our community,” said Councilmember David Lesser, “it restores our capacity to prosecute crimes beyond just pursuing the administrative citation process.”
