New Polling Establishes Nathan Hochman as Clear Favorite to Defeat Gascon in L.A. County District Attorney Race
- Voters overwhelmingly oppose Gascon’s re-election, with just 15% saying they had a favorable opinion of the D.A.
- Hochman leads all challengers in the March 5 primary and would defeat Gascon in head-to-head match-up by 15-20 percentage points
LOS ANGELES / December 14, 2023 – New polling has found that Nathan Hochman, former federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney General, and L.A. City Ethics Commission President, is a strong favorite to defeat George Gascon in the 2024 election and become the next Los Angeles County District Attorney.
A survey of 1,942 likely voters polled chose Hochman as the leading challenger to Gascon by a significant margin. The poll showed Hochman and Gascon prevailing as the top-two vote-getters in the March 2024 primary, and Hochman then overwhelmingly defeating Gascon in a head-to-head match-up in the November 2024 general election by 15-20 percentage points.
Asked who they would vote for in the March 2024 primary election, the likely voters responded: Gascon 18%, Hochman 12%, Hatami 8%, Ramirez 6%, Chemerinsky 6%, McKinney 3%, Archuletta 1%, Mitchell 1%, Milton 0% and Siddall 0%. The rest of those surveyed said they were undecided.
Asked who they would vote for between Hochman and Gascon in a general election, 56% chose Hochman, 18% chose Gascon and 26% said they were undecided. Even if Gascon were to receive a majority of the undecided voters, Hochman would still win by 15-20 percentage points.
The polling was conducted by Remington Research Group.
“The results show Nathan Hochman is well positioned to end up in the ‘top two’ in the March 2024 primary election, move onto the November 2024 general election with incumbent District Attorney George Gascon, and ultimately prevail to become LA County’s next District Attorney,” Remington Research said in its final report.
The polling also found that Gascon is significantly unpopular among voters. Just 15% of likely voters said they had a favorable opinion of Gascon, compared to 49% who said they had unfavorable view. Asked whether Gascon deserved to be re-elected, just 18% of those surveyed said he did, while 54% said he did not.
Significantly, 60% of those surveyed said they feel less safe than they did a few years ago, while only 11% said they feel safer.
“The poll results reflect what I’ve been saying since Day 1 of this campaign: Gascon has made us all less safe and the public is crying out for change,” Hochman said. “They want an independent leader who will enforce the law, put dangerous criminals in prison, and prioritize public safety over politics. They know I am that leader. As the next District Attorney, I will emphasize the interests of victims and the public instead of the interests of criminals.”
In addition to leading in the polling, Hochman is leading in fundraising. Last month, Hochman announced that he had raised a record-setting amount of over $1 million for his campaign, earlier than any candidate for L.A. County district attorney had ever crossed that threshold. This week, he announced that he had reserved more than $1 million in television advertising, with more than six-figures placed on every major network, adding significant messaging power and momentum to his campaign.
